The 2026/27 Serie A season is already developing into a fascinating contest, with defending champions Inter Milan, Roma, AC Milan, Juventus and Napoli among the clubs attracting the most attention after the opening five rounds.
Inter remain one of the early teams to watch after an unbeaten start, but Roma have matched the champions stride for stride. AC Milan have also moved into contention after a convincing win over Lecce, while Juventus have responded to an inconsistent beginning with back-to-back victories.
With the league now heading into an international break, the latest round has provided plenty of talking points across Italy.
Inter survive Roma test as Martínez strikes twice
Defending champions Inter Milan were forced to fight back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
Roma made a blistering start, with Manu Koné scoring twice in the first half to put Gian Piero Gasperini’s side in control.
Inter, however, produced a strong response after the interval, with Lautaro Martínez scoring in the 46th minute before completing his brace in the 79th minute.
The comeback extended Inter’s impressive resilience this season and denied Roma what would have been a statement victory over the reigning champions.
The draw also ended the perfect starts of both teams, although Inter and Roma remain among the early pace-setters.
Inter had entered the season as defending champions after winning the previous campaign’s Scudetto and Coppa Italia.
Milan hit Lecce for three
AC Milan strengthened their position with a commanding 3-0 victory over Lecce.
Christian Pulisic opened the scoring before Adrien Rabiot and Diego Moreira completed the win.
The result moved Milan to 11 points and fifth place after five matches, giving the Rossoneri an important boost following an inconsistent opening to the campaign.
Pulisic’s influence has also become an important storyline around the club, with Milan reportedly working on a new long-term contract for the United States international.
The 2026/27 campaign began with Milan travelling to face Torino, while the club’s schedule includes another major meeting with Juventus later in the season.
Juventus beginning to find their rhythm
Juventus have also responded positively to their early-season challenges.
The Turin giants defeated Atalanta 2-0, with Francisco Conceição and Bremer finding the net.
The victory lifted Juventus to 10 points after five matches and placed them seventh in the early standings.
The result follows Juventus’ 1-1 draw with Milan earlier in the campaign and leaves the club within touching distance of the leading group.
Away from the pitch, Juventus are also reportedly considering changes to their recruitment strategy, with greater emphasis being placed on Italian players and traditional scouting methods.
Napoli drop more points
Napoli have experienced a less convincing start to their title defence.
The champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Fiorentina, with Billy Gilmour putting Napoli ahead before a deflected effort from Alex Jimenez brought Fiorentina level.
The result left Napoli on seven points, while Fiorentina moved to four.
Napoli’s campaign had already included a high-profile meeting with Inter, which the Milan club won 3-2 in a dramatic contest earlier in September.
With points already dropped against major rivals and Fiorentina, Napoli will need consistency if they are to remain involved in the title race.
Frosinone continue impressive start
One of the early surprises has been Frosinone.
The newly promoted side defeated Como 2-0, with Giacomo Calò and Giorgi Kvernadze scoring to secure another important result.
The victory took Frosinone to 10 points, putting them level with Juventus in the early standings. Como also have 10 points but slipped behind their opponents following their first defeat of the season.
Frosinone’s fast start has added another layer of intrigue to a Serie A campaign that already features several established clubs battling near the top.
Lazio also making progress
Lazio continued their strong start with a 2-0 victory over Venezia.
The win kept them among the leading sides and ensured that the early table remains tightly packed.
Cagliari are another team making an impression, with Daniel Maldini’s goal securing a 1-0 victory away to Udinese.
Parma claim first win
Parma also picked up their first victory of the season, beating Genoa 2-1.
David Romero and Pontus Almqvist scored for Parma, while Milutin Osmajic found the net for Genoa.
The result gave Parma an important lift, while Genoa remain near the bottom of the early standings.
International break pauses Serie A
The Serie A campaign will now pause for the September/October international window.
Under the league’s 2026/27 calendar, Serie A is suspended on September 27 and October 4, with the two dates forming part of a longer international window.
The league will resume in October, with Inter scheduled to face Parma on matchday six.
The break also comes at an interesting point in the season. Inter and Roma have established themselves near the top, Lazio are also in the leading group, while Milan and Juventus are within reach. Napoli, meanwhile, have work to do after a series of dropped points.
With only five rounds completed, there is still a long way to go. But the early results suggest that the 2026/27 Serie A title race could involve several clubs rather than developing into a two-team contest.
And with the likes of Martínez, Pulisic and a number of emerging young players already making headlines, Serie A has wasted little time producing drama in the new campaign.
