Could the return of Kelechi Iheanacho, Stanley Nwabali, Ola Aina and Benjamin Fredrick give Nigeria the boost they need ahead of a busy international schedule?

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has recalled the quartet as Nigeria prepares for a Russia friendly and two crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Super Eagles are set to play three international matches in 12 days, beginning with a home clash against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on September 25.

Nigeria will then travel to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau four days later before taking on Russia in an international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod on October 6.

Iheanacho headlines the returning players after earning a place in Chelle’s 24-man squad for the Russia fixture, ending a 16-month absence from the national team.

The 29-year-old last represented Nigeria in May 2025 when the Super Eagles faced Jamaica in the Unity Cup final in London.

Nigeria drew 2-2 with Jamaica before securing a 5-4 victory on penalties, with Iheanacho featuring in the encounter.

Goalkeeper Nwabali has also returned to the squad, while Aina and Fredrick provide further defensive options for Chelle as Nigeria continue preparations for the upcoming qualifiers.

Iheanacho’s return will be closely watched as the forward looks to re-establish himself in the Super Eagles setup following his lengthy absence.

With three internationals packed into a demanding 12-day period, Chelle will be hoping the returning players can quickly settle into his plans and help Nigeria secure positive results in their upcoming fixtures.
