Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has completed a surprise return to South African Premier Division side Chippa United after failing to secure a move elsewhere.

Nwabali had left the Chilli Boys in February after requesting the termination of his contract, with expectations that he would join another club during the transfer window.

However, the 30-year-old has now rejoined the Eastern Cape outfit, who confirmed his return in a statement posted on their official X account.

“Chippa United Football Club is delighted to welcome Stanley Nwabali back to the Chilli Boys. After taking time away, Stanley Nwabali returns to the Eastern Cape, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the club,” the club said.

The Nigeria international first signed for Chippa United from Nigerian side Katsina United in 2022 and established himself as one of the club’s most dependable performers.

During his initial spell, Nwabali made 66 league appearances and earned widespread recognition following his impressive performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a key role in the Super Eagles’ run to the final.

Despite attracting interest after leaving Chippa United earlier this year, the former Enyimba goalkeeper was unable to finalise a transfer, paving the way for a return to familiar surroundings.

His comeback is expected to provide a major boost for Chippa United as they prepare for the new South African top-flight season, while Nwabali will also be eager to maintain his place as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of upcoming international assignments.
