Manchester City have strengthened their squad with the signing of England international Niamh Charles from Women’s Super League rivals Chelsea in a deal worth £500,000.
The experienced left-back has signed a three-year contract at the Joie Stadium, ending a successful six-year spell at Chelsea, where she made 173 appearances and established herself as one of the league’s most consistent defenders.
Charles arrives at City with an impressive trophy collection, having won five Women’s Super League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups during her time at Stamford Bridge. She was also part of the Chelsea squad that reached the 2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League final under Emma Hayes before losing to Barcelona.
Speaking after completing the move, the 27-year-old expressed her excitement about joining the newly crowned WSL champions.
“I’m really happy to be here, and I can’t wait to get started,” Charles said.
“I’ve seen from the outside and have obviously played against City over the past few years, and they had great success this year.
“What they’re building as a team is something I wanted to be a part of. It’s the perfect fit, and hopefully we can have some good times together.”
Charles, who began her professional career at Liverpool, joins Manchester City as they continue to strengthen a squad aiming to defend their domestic title and challenge for European honours next season.
Her arrival also comes as Chelsea welcome Republic of Ireland defender Katie McCabe from Arsenal, effectively replacing Charles in Sonia Bompastor’s squad.
For Manchester City, Charles fills the void left by Spanish full-back Leila Ouahabi, who recently departed for Chicago Stars FC. She will wear the number 21 shirt at her new club.
The England defender brings valuable experience in both the Women’s Super League and the UEFA Women’s Champions League, while also hoping regular football under City manager Gareth Taylor will help secure her place in Sarina Wiegman’s England squad for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Charles has earned 34 caps for the Lionesses and was among England’s heroes at Euro 2025, calmly converting a penalty in the shootout victory over Spain in the final.
Manchester City have been active in the transfer market following their first WSL title in a decade. The club have already signed England forward Beth Mead after her departure from Arsenal, while top scorer Khadija Shaw committed her future by signing a new four-year contract in May.
City director of football Therese Sjogran believes Charles can make an immediate impact.
“To add a player of Niamh’s ability and experience to our squad after the success of last season is a huge positive,” Sjogran said.
“We’re all excited to see what she can bring and despite everything she’s already achieved in the game, we firmly believe her best years are still to come.
“She has the drive to become a better player every day and also challenge her team-mates to do the same.”
With proven pedigree, international experience and a winning mentality, Charles could prove to be another key piece in Manchester City’s quest to establish themselves as the dominant force in English women’s football.
