World Cup: Mbappe Overcomes Early Penalty Miss to Fire France Past Morocco

France booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a composed 2-0 victory over Morocco, as captain Kylian Mbappe recovered from an early penalty miss to inspire Didier Deschamps’ side to another major tournament triumph.

The quarter-final clash was billed as one of the tournament’s standout encounters, with Morocco hoping to extend their remarkable run against the 2022 finalists. However, France’s quality eventually proved decisive as goals from Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele secured progression to the last four.

The match did not begin according to script for the French skipper. Mbappe was handed a golden opportunity to put Les Bleus ahead from the penalty spot in the opening half, but Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced a superb save to deny the tournament’s leading scorer.

The miss briefly lifted Morocco’s confidence as Walid Regragui’s men attempted to frustrate the European giants with disciplined defending and quick transitions.

France, however, refused to lose composure.

Deschamps’ side continued to dominate possession and create openings, with Mbappe remaining at the heart of every dangerous attacking move despite his earlier setback.

Their persistence was eventually rewarded when Mbappe found the breakthrough, redeeming himself with a clinical finish to give France the advantage and silence Morocco’s growing belief.

The goal shifted the momentum firmly in France’s favour, forcing Morocco to chase the game and leaving spaces for the French attack to exploit.

As Morocco committed more bodies forward in search of an equaliser, France struck again. Ousmane Dembele finished off another flowing attacking move to double the lead and effectively end Morocco’s hopes of reaching another historic World Cup semi-final.

The victory once again highlighted France’s depth and resilience. Despite the early disappointment from the penalty spot, Mbappe demonstrated why he remains one of world football’s elite players by responding with a decisive performance when his team needed him most.

For Morocco, the defeat brought an end to another impressive World Cup campaign. The Atlas Lions battled bravely throughout the contest but were ultimately undone by France’s clinical finishing and superior attacking quality.

France now advance to the semi-finals, where they will face either Spain or Belgium for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

With Mbappe continuing his outstanding tournament despite the rare penalty miss, Les Bleus remain firmly on course to reach a third consecutive World Cup final as they continue their pursuit of another global crown.
