Spain’s national football team produced one of their most convincing performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to defeat the Austria national football team 3-0 in Los Angeles, securing a place in the Round of 16 with a display that underlined their championship credentials.
After a relatively subdued start to the tournament, the reigning European champions finally found top gear as a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and a towering header from Pedro Porro sealed an emphatic victory.
Spain gradually assumed control after a cautious opening spell. Aymeric Laporte came close with a header before Marc Cucurella thought he had broken the deadlock from a corner, only for his effort to be ruled out after the referee penalised a foul on Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.
Schlager continued to frustrate Spain with excellent saves to deny Lamine Yamal and Oyarzabal in quick succession, but the Austrian resistance was finally broken in the 35th minute.
Cucurella turned provider with a perfectly weighted low cross that Oyarzabal swept confidently into the net to hand Spain a deserved lead.
Yamal almost doubled the advantage before the interval after Álex Baena flicked a free-kick onto the crossbar, but Schlager once again came to Austria’s rescue with another outstanding save.
Spain resumed after the break with the same authority.
Rodri saw a powerful effort deflect narrowly wide, while Austria’s best opportunity fell to substitute Sasa Kalajdzic, whose attempt failed to trouble the Spanish defence.
The match was effectively settled when Baena delivered another pinpoint cross into the penalty area, allowing Porro to power a downward header beyond Schlager for Spain’s second goal.
Austria briefly stemmed the tide when captain David Alaba cleared Yamal’s effort off the line, but there was no stopping Spain from adding a third in the closing stages.
Cucurella completed an outstanding individual performance by supplying his third decisive contribution of the evening, delivering another inviting cross for Oyarzabal to calmly slot home his second goal and wrap up an impressive victory.
Spain now advance to the Round of 16, where they will face either the Portugal national football team or the Croatia national football team as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
