1-0 Victory, Canada Ends South Africa's Dream to Reach World Cup Last 16

Canada became the first nation to book a place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustaquio’s dramatic stoppage-time winner secured a 1-0 victory over South Africa.

The co-hosts appeared destined for extra time after being frustrated for much of the contest by a resilient South African side, but Eustaquio produced the decisive moment in the 92nd minute to send the home supporters into celebration.

The midfielder controlled the ball inside the penalty area before calmly firing a half-volley into the far corner beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, ending South Africa’s remarkable World Cup journey.

South Africa had produced a disciplined and courageous defensive display throughout the match, frustrating the Canadians and coming within minutes of forcing extra time.

Canada came close on several occasions, with Moise Bombito seeing his header cleared off the goal line by Aubrey Modiba, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi made a superb last-ditch challenge to deny Jonathan David what appeared to be a certain goal.

The hosts also appealed strongly for a penalty shortly before half-time after Richie Laryea went down under a challenge from Khuliso Mudau inside the penalty area. However, following a VAR review, the referee upheld the original decision, and play continued.

South Africa, which reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history, defended bravely and remained a threat on the counterattack, but ultimately could not withstand Canada’s late pressure.

The victory makes Canada the first team to secure a place in the last 16 and keeps alive hopes of a deep run on home soil.

Canada manager Jesse Marsch praised his players after the final whistle, telling them, “You guys showed your character. You guys are Canadian heroes now. Canadian heroes for the future children of this country.”

For South Africa, the defeat brings an end to a memorable campaign that included their historic qualification for the knockout stage, while Canada marches on with growing belief and home support behind them.
