Arsenal have emerged as serious contenders in the race to sign Roma midfielder Manu Koné as the Gunners intensify efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
The French midfielder has been placed on the market by Roma, who are reportedly under pressure to generate significant capital gains before June 30. The Serie A club is believed to be targeting around €50 million in player sales over the next two weeks and views Koné as one of its most valuable assets.
Interest in the 24-year-old has been growing across Europe. Spanish giants Atlético Madrid previously explored a move and reportedly tabled an offer worth €45 million, including bonuses. However, Koné turned down the opportunity, with the midfielder understood to be holding out hope of securing a move to French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
At present, PSG has yet to make a concrete approach, leaving the door open for other clubs to enter the race.
According to reports from Italy, Arsenal have moved decisively by reaching an agreement with Koné’s representatives. The Premier League side has identified the former Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder as a player capable of adding quality, energy, and technical ability to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
With personal terms reportedly no longer considered an obstacle, Arsenal are now weighing up an official bid to present to Roma.
The Giallorossi remain firm in their valuation and are demanding at least €50 million if the midfielder is to depart before the end of the month.
Roma’s position is also influenced by the arrival of head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Club officials have reportedly informed Koné’s entourage that any transfer must be completed quickly. Should a deal fail to materialise before the World Cup concludes, Gasperini is expected to regard the Frenchman as a key figure in his plans for the upcoming campaign.
In that scenario, Roma would likely require a significantly higher offer before considering a sale.
Koné has developed into one of Roma’s most important midfielders since arriving in the Italian capital, attracting attention for his ball-winning ability, athleticism, and composure in possession. His performances have made him one of the most sought-after midfielders on the transfer market this summer.
With Arsenal now making concrete moves and Roma eager to resolve their financial objectives before the June 30 deadline, the coming days could prove decisive in determining the future of one of Europe’s most highly rated young midfielders.
