Japan Strikes Late to Earn Dramatic Draw Against Netherlands in World Cup Opener

Japan produced a spirited late comeback to snatch a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in an entertaining Group F encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Dallas.

The Samurai Blue showed remarkable resilience, twice coming from behind and denying the Dutch victory thanks to a dramatic late equaliser from Daichi Kamada.

After a cautious opening period, the match burst into life shortly after the interval. Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring in the 50th minute, rising highest to head home from a Ryan Gravenberch delivery and give the Oranje a deserved advantage.

Japan responded strongly and were back on level terms seven minutes later when Shunsuke Nakamura found the net to silence the Dutch supporters and reignite the contest.

The Netherlands regained control in the 64th minute through Crysencio Summerville, whose well-taken finish appeared to put Ronald Koeman’s side on course for all three points and early command of Group F.

However, Japan refused to surrender.

As the match entered its closing stages, the Asian giants continued to press forward in search of an equaliser. Their persistence was rewarded in the 89th minute when substitute Koki Ogawa’s header from a corner caused chaos in the penalty area before Daichi Kamada applied the decisive touch, diverting the ball into the net to spark wild celebrations among the Japanese players and fans.

The dramatic late goal ensured Japan earned a valuable point from a contest in which they repeatedly demonstrated character and determination against one of Europe’s traditional powerhouses.

The result leaves Group F finely balanced after the opening round of fixtures, with both nations taking positives from an entertaining draw.
