Qatar national football team earned the first World Cup point in their history after a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser secured a 1-1 draw against Switzerland national football team.

A match that appeared destined to end in Swiss victory was turned on its head in the 94th minute when defender Boualem Khoukhi rose highest to head home a cross from Homam Ahmed, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and supporters alike.

The late strike completed a remarkable turnaround for a Qatari side that had spent much of the contest under pressure from the more experienced Swiss outfit.

Switzerland, coached by Murat Yakin, looked set to claim all three points after taking the lead through Breel Embolo in the first half. The striker converted from the penalty spot after midfielder Remo Freuler was brought down by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada inside the area.

Although Switzerland controlled possession and created numerous chances, they were unable to extend their advantage. Dan Ndoye, Ruben Vargas, and Embolo all squandered promising opportunities that could have put the result beyond doubt.

Those missed chances ultimately proved costly as Switzerland’s intensity dropped in the closing stages, allowing Qatar to grow into the game and search for an unlikely equaliser.

The late goal denied Switzerland the opportunity to move clear at the top of Group B ahead of upcoming fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team and Canada national football team.

For Qatar, however, the result represents a landmark moment. After enduring difficult World Cup campaigns in the past, they finally have their first point on football’s biggest stage, keeping their hopes of progression alive and providing a memorable chapter in the nation’s football history.
