Relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers have moved swiftly to strengthen their squad ahead of life in the Championship, securing the signing of veteran defender Kieran Trippier and opening talks over a return for former fan favourite Raul Jimenez.
Trippier joins Wolves on a two-year deal after leaving Newcastle United at the expiration of his contract. The 35-year-old arrives at Molineux with a wealth of experience, having made 160 appearances for Newcastle and earning 54 caps for the England national football team between 2017 and 2024.
Wolves head coach Rob Edwards believes the experienced full-back can provide the leadership needed as the club aims for an immediate return to the Premier League.
“We know what we’ve lacked this year, and we know what we need next year: experience, leadership, resilient characters and strong characters,” Edwards said.
“That’s what we’re going to need in abundance, and Tripps ticks every box.”
Jimenez Reunion Edges Closer
Meanwhile, Wolves are also working on a deal to bring Jimenez back to Molineux after the Mexican striker was released by Fulham.
The 35-year-old remains one of the most beloved figures in recent Wolves history, having scored 57 goals in 166 appearances during his first spell at the club between 2018 and 2023.
His tally of 40 Premier League goals remains a club record, underlining the impact he made during Wolves’ successful years in the top flight.
Jimenez is currently away with the Mexico national football team as the World Cup hosts prepare for their opening match against South Africa, but discussions over a return to the Midlands are understood to be ongoing.
Championship Rebuild Underway
Following a disappointing campaign that ended in relegation, Wolves are clearly targeting proven experience as they seek to rebuild.
The addition of Trippier would bring leadership, top-level pedigree and promotion know-how, while a Jimenez reunion could provide goals and a familiar figure capable of inspiring both teammates and supporters.
With the summer transfer window gathering pace, Wolves have signalled their intent to mount a serious challenge for promotion and make their stay in the Championship a short one.
